Course Description
It is part of becoming an independent researcher in plant sciences to be able to lead and manage researchers. This requires leadership and management skills in addition to academic skills and interpersonal competencies. Therefore, this course has been designed with the aim to assist postdocs to develop leadership skills that will enable them to manage people in their project & research environment.
By the end of this course participants will:

  • have an understanding of the term formal and informal leadership in an academic environment
  • have reflected on leadership aspects of their postdoc role
  • have developed strategies for leading, motivating, empowering, influencing and persuading contributors in their research context
  • know the main leadership responsibilities and selected leadership tools
  • have developed options for managing challenging leadership situations (case studies)

Course content

  • Defining leadership
  • Role concept of leadership: defining, shaping and gaining acceptance of the leadership role
  • Communication and meetings in a leader’s role
  • Concept of lateral leadership: leading without formal authority
  • Leadership responsibilities and tools
  • Analyzing the situation, setting goals, delegating tasks, controlling
  • Case studies on challenging leadership situations (preparatory task)
  • Reflection, feedback
